City of Palo Alto residents are eligible for a rebate of $3,500 for a Heat Pump Water Heater replacing a gas water heaters. $500 rebate is available for electric water heaters that are replaced with heat pump water heaters.

In addition to the rebates, the city of Palo Alto has two other programs to help home owners replace gas water heaters with heat pumps:
The full-service program offers turnkey installation at a standard price for a standard 65-gallon heat pump water heater installation of only $2,300. In addition, for homes that need some extra work to electrify their water heaters, the City also offers a credit of up to $1,000 for site preparation costs.
For residents with water heater emergencies, they can switch quickly to a new heat pump water heater within two days using the City's emergency program. Costs start at $3,650, weekend service available at extra charge.
